A graphic and visual designer has transformed an old Aglandjia basketball court with a “pioneering work of art”.
Stelios Papageorgiou, a graphic and visual designer graduate from the European University of Cyprus, painted the basketball court on Filias street in Aglandjia bringing colour to the neighbourhood.
His work, in addition to bold designs and colours, depicts a geometric composition with the rules of Design (Space, Line, Balance, Colour, Shape, Shape), European University said in a press release last week.
“As a professional graphic designer with experience in street art, I tried to unite the two parallel worlds with a graphic design approach, aiming to help strengthen the local youth and enrich the cultural image of Aglandjia municipality,” says the young artist.
The work was completed as part of the program “Young Cities” and the action “Artistic Creations in the Municipality of Aglandjia”, sponsored by the National Betting Authority and the Youth Board of Cyprus.
“The goal was to utilize and upgrade the space as best we could. Along with the mural, a basketball hoop was added to the stadium, the benches in the green area were upgraded and decorated and recycling bins were placed,” the artist explained.
Papageorgiou was named Student of the Year 2020 at the Cyprus Design and Advertising Awards, and as one of the three Young Creators at the Greek Graphic Design and Illustration Awards (EVGE New) 2021 in Creators.
For the last three years Papageorgiou has been a member of the marketing team of the European University of Cyprus as a graphic designer.
