European University Cyprus this week announced that in collaboration with the International Union of Tourism Policy and Middlesex University, will be holding an international tourism conference in Cyprus.

The conference, which is set to take place in Nicosia from June 21 to June 24, 2023, will examine innovative sustainable practices in travel and tourism, with a strong emphasis on the sector’s recovery and resilience.

The event will be hosted at the premises of the European University Cyprus and held under the auspices of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism.

“While the tourism sector has demonstrated resilience in the face of various challenges, recent events such as the pandemic, the war between Russia and Ukraine, and the energy crisis have significantly impacted the economies of numerous tourist destinations,” the university said in the announcement of the event.

“Academics and tourism professionals worldwide have recognized the pressing need for a reorientation of tourism development, management, and implementation in these uncertain times,” it added.

Moreover, the university explained that “this necessitates a greater emphasis on innovative products and practices that prioritise sustainable tourism principles, as well as innovative sustainable solutions crucial for the full recovery and resilience of international tourism”.

The aim of the conference, the university said, is to explore innovative sustainable products, strategies, and practices in order to foster stronger and more sustainable global tourism development within the prevailing uncertainty plaguing the local and international economies.

In the past, this conference has been held in various countries including China, Thailand, Italy, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Greece, and Cyprus.

“Choosing Cyprus, particularly Nicosia, as the venue for this year’s conference presents a unique opportunity for the island to showcase itself not only as a welcoming holiday destination but also as a hub for hosting international conferences on European tourism dynamics,” the university stated.

“Moreover, highlighting Nicosia’s historical, cultural, and developmental achievements could pave the way for further research into the inherent characteristics of Cypriot tourism in the current economic and health crisis and the ever-intensifying global competition,” it added.

The conference will bring together academics, researchers, policymakers, business consultants, professionals, government officials, and postgraduate students specializing in tourism from various countries.

In addition, it will provide them with an opportunity for dialogue and the exchange of ideas on crucial tourism topics.

This international conference promises to be a significant platform for advancing innovative and sustainable practices in the tourism industry, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among experts from around the world.

Finally, with its focus on recovery, resilience, and sustainability, the conference will seek to shape the future of tourism by addressing the challenges and opportunities in today’s rapidly evolving global landscape.

The organisers have clarified that the language of the conference is English while the participation fee for Cypriot citizens has been reduced to €50 and includes access to presentations, meals, and coffee breaks.
